Samuel Maverick purchases three of the Africans brought to Boston on the Desire.

M.F. Sweetser subsequently describes Maverick as “The first New England slaveholder,” after he purchases a man and two women brought from the West Indies earlier in the year. Maverick is subsequently accused of seeking to force the enslaved persons to breed.
